Exciting times ahead!
October 6th 2023
Dear readers, I am now living in London!
Whilst being here, I am undertaking a Practical PhD at Trinity Laban Conservatoire of Music and Dance.
So, what is a practical PhD? Basically, practice-based research is an original investigation undertaken in order to gain new knowledge partly by means of practice and the outcomes of that practice. In a doctoral thesis, claims of originality and contribution to knowledge may be demonstrated through creative outcomes in the form of designs, music, digital media, performances and exhibitions. Whilst the significance and context of the claims are described in words, a full understanding can only be obtained with direct reference to the outcomes.
For my audition to this degree, I wrote a Project Proposal I chose to call: " A practice-based research exploring the fusion of jazz and classical music from the 20th and 21st century, with a particular emphasis on methods and techniques that constitute the compositional and improvisational language between classical music and jazz, by some defined as Third Stream music. "
This means that I will be devoting my next three years to composing, playing and learning about music at the crossroads between classical and jazz. If you are interested in having a chat or sharing some musical thoughts with me, please contact me.
I will of course be touring and playing concerts as well. My next tour is in the Netherlands from October 17th until October 21st, together with Jesse Schilderink, Jens Meijer and Julian Haugland. You can find more about that at my "Upcoming Concerts" page.
All the best,
Philip
