Philip Edwards Granly, 26, was born in Molde in Norway but spent his childhood in Stavanger and Ski. He is a pianist, composer and bandleader currently based in London.
At the age of 18 Philip started studying for his bachelor’s degree at the prestigious Jazz Academy at the Norwegian University of Science and Technology in Trondheim, also known as Jazzlinja. Here he explored all the different styles of jazz, from stride to contemporary. Over the years he has especially come to focus on being true to his ideas and developing these further, conveying his personality when both playing and composing. After completing his degree, Philip moved to Oslo where he completed jazz composition at the Norwegian Academy of Music while gaining experience playing in different groups. Now Philip works as a freelance composer and musician, whilst undertaking his PhD at Trinity Laban Conservatoire Of Music And Dance.
In 2021 he won the prestigious award for young composers given by 5 major music institutions in Norway.
The Philip Granly Trio was formed during his student years in Trondheim where he teamed up with two fellow students. The trio’s main goal has always been to explore the possibilities which lie in merging expressions of written classic ensemble music with improvised jazz music.
Coming from a mixed musical background, Philip eagerly takes part in projects spanning from classical music to jazz and contemporary rhythmic music. As a young classical pianist, Philip won the Norwegian Sparre Olsen competition with Trip Trap Trio performing Mendelssohn’s piano trio in D minor. During his senior year in high school, his jazz group Høylytt was awarded the jazz prize “The Future of Norwegian Jazz” by the Norwegian Jazz Forum. Philip Edwards Granly also plays in Rotterdam/Trondheim Collective, Eskild Okkenhaug Sextet and he is currently Artistic Director for The New Norwegian Big Band.
